This article will cover how to adjust rooms in mmhmm desktop, mmhmm web, and mmhmm Studio. Rooms are what we call the backgrounds you use in mmhmm. There are a couple of different types of rooms:
- Still images
- Dynamic rooms - Moving backgrounds (procedurally generated with math) with settings you control. Dynamic Rooms have a play button (triangle) icon.

Note: Previously uploaded rooms will appear in the Custom tab. - Click Add Room to upload a JPG, PNG, or GIF from your computer.
Tip: For best results, use an image with a width-to-height pixel ratio of 16:9. We recommend 1920 x 1080 pixels, which is a common size that’s big enough to look great in mmhmm.
- Click the Rooms tab on the top right-hand side of mmhmm Studio., then pick one of the visible rooms, or click + More Rooms... to view all available rooms.
You can also create your own room from any image or video. To do this, follow the steps below:
- Go to the Rooms panel on the top right-hand side of mmhmm and click + More Rooms...
- Scroll to the bottom of the left-hand side column and select Add your own.
- Here, click the Add Room button (or just drag an image into the space shown).
- You can pick any JPG, PNG, GIF, MOV, or MP4 file on your hard drive. After adding rooms you can close that room window to get it out of the way again. Your new rooms will appear at the bottom of the Rooms panel in the main mmhmm window.
To rearrange the order they appear, click on any room and drag it to the position you want. The first ten rooms are assigned shortcuts (⌘0-9) to make it easy to change rooms quickly.
Use your real room as a background
- Click on the Presenter tab on the top right-hand side of mmhmm Studio. Then, click the Full Frame button.
- Click the Camera button and make sure the box next to "I have a green screen" is unchecked.
- You can drag the top and side edges of the frame to crop what you want to show.
Adjust room settings
Most rooms have adjustable settings. Follow the steps below to learn how to change them.
Note: These settings only affect the room you have selected.
- Navigate to the Rooms panel on the upper right-hand side of mmhmm and select a room.
- Then, click on the gear icon in the lower right corner of the room's thumbnail.
- Horizontal and vertical tilt – Tilt is a useful tactic to give your room a sense of depth by angling the slides in the room.
Some rooms, such as Dynamic rooms, have extra settings, such as speed controls.
Play around and experiment with Dynamic Room settings that you enjoy most. Clicking on the blue "Reset" button will change the settings back to their default.
To get out of room settings, use the "<" icon. This will take you back to the main panel.
Manage custom rooms
You can remove any room that you don’t want to use anymore.
- Click Custom in the Rooms tab and find the custom room you want to manage.
- Right click on the room you want to manage. You can choose between renaming the room or deleting the room from your account.
- Go to the Rooms panel on the right-hand side of mmhmm.
- Select a room you want to remove and then click on the gear icon.
- Next, click the ... icon next to the room name, and click Remove to remove it.
To get out of room settings, use the "<" icon. This will take you back to the main panel.
