Types of cameras you can use with mmhmm

Webcam video quality is one of the most important aspects of a high-quality presentation. Learn the different types of cameras you can use with mmhmm below.

Built-in webcam

If your computer has a built-in webcam, that's great! You’re ready to use mmhmm.

External webcam

mmhmm works even better with an external HD webcam. External HD webcams provide higher image quality and greater control of your recording angle compared to built-in webcams.

Here are some external webcams we recommend using with mmhmm:

DSLR

It may be possible to use your DSLR camera as an external webcam. DSLRs have the highest quality image sensors and allow for a greater variety of lenses which can produce a more professional looking image. The following DSLR manufacturers offer webcam software:

Note: If you're having trouble using Canon EOS Utility with mmhmm, try the following workaround (only applicable to Macs with Apple Silicon).
  1. Ensure the mmhmm app is closed.
  2. Open Finder and go to Applications.
  3. Find and right-click the mmhmm app, then select Get Info.
  4. In the app info window, select the Open using Rosetta checkbox.

If you use a DSLR from a manufacturer that doesn't provide their own webcam software, you'll need a capture card such as the Elgato Cam Link 4K to process your camera's video feed. Check Elgato Cam Link 4K's compatibility with your DSLR.

Smartphone camera

Many smartphones such as the iPhone and Google Pixel have award-winning cameras and powerful processors that produce high-quality video. With third-party apps, you can connect your smartphone to your computer and use it as a webcam.
